When we launched Network World in 1986, voice mail wasn't mainstream, e-mail was a kludge, and OSI was going to ameliorate the tremendous compatibility issues plaguing the industry. We haven't solved all the world's network problems in the ensuing 15 years, but before we take another step forward, let's reflect on where we've been.
