GitHub cranks delivery speeds, adds analytics

The world's most popular Git hosted service now has page analytics and improved security

Rounding out its hosting service for millions of users, the GitHub online code repository has added more bandwidth for project home pages and has introduced analytics to summarize the Web traffic each project generates.

The company has contracted with a content delivery network (CDN) to boost the delivery times of GitHub Pages, a Web page hosting service the company offers to provide information about projects managed on GitHub.

GitHub did not mention which CDN it is using, but in general CDNs can speed the delivery of Web pages by using servers distributed around the globe to cache frequently consulted content.

While most users won't have to make any changes to enjoy the boosted speeds, the company did note that those parties who route their GitHub access through their own subdomains might have to make some adjustments to their DNS records.

The company has also introduced an analysis service that tracks traffic to each GitHub repository. The service, which is now embedded in each repository's graphics page, provides details on the number of visitors, the sites that referred them, and the pages they visited.

GitHub has also made some changes to improve security. It has extended to GitHub Pages the protection it already had in GitHub itself to prevent denial-of-service attacks. It also now supports newer versions of TLS (Transport Layer Security), versions 1.1 and 1.2.

GitHub is a popular site for hosting software code. It uses the Git version control system first developed by Linux creator Linus Torvalds. It is now home to about 10 million software projects, making it the world's largest online code repository, according to the San Francisco company.
