Tintri, a manufacturer of purpose-built solid state drive (SSD) and Serial ATA (SATA) hybrid storage arrays, announced VMstore, a virtual machine aware storage appliance. The company also announced that it had closed an $18 million Round C of venture financing. Existing investors, NEA and Lightspeed Venture Partners, provided the additional funding.
The Tintri VMstore is a VM-aware system that consists of 4U nodes with an 8.2TB useable capacity. Data is distributed between nine multilevel cell (MLC)-based SSDs and 15 SATA drives. The system automatically presents itself as a file store to the VMware vCenter management software. Capable of supporting up to 200 virtual machines, the intent of the embedded software and file system is to keep all of the I/Os for primary data on the SSDs. The file system has deep knowledge of flash management and uses the SATA capacity for snapshots and other out-of-band housekeeping operations. In line compression and de-duplication is used to minimize write amplification and maximize the amount of data that can be held on the SSDs.
A simple set of reporting and management controls shows the amount of resource utilization consumed by each virtual machine and allows some fine tuning if a particular workload deserves priority access to the SSDs. Connectivity is provided by two 1Gbps Ethernet ports and two 10Gbps Ethernet ports. The VMstore has been shipping for about 90 days. List price for a node is $65,000, providing high performance storage at a list of $8 per GB.
