Kaminario, a startup with a DRAM storage appliance, introduced this week an expansion of its storage portfolio with a DRAM and SSD storage appliance.
The next-generation K2 appliance incorporates Fusion-io's ioMemory Flash technology. This allows a hybrid storage appliance for block-level applications such as transaction-intensive databases and online transaction processing.
Kaminario now has the Kaminario K2-H, which is the hybrid DRAM and SSD appliance for optimized read/write workloads. They also offer the K2-D DRAM-only appliance for write-intensive and latency-sensitive random workloads.
The K2-H combines DRAM for write-intensive, latency-sensitive data and SSD for read-intensive data.
The company also offers the K2-F, an SSD-only appliance for predictable read-intensive workloads such as data warehousing. It is the K2-H that includes Fusion-io's ioDrive Duo as a memory accelerator.
The K2 appliances start at $30 per GB.
According to a survey conducted by the Storage Networking Industry Association and Storage Strategies NOW, 43% of the respondents are planning or have deployed SSDs or DRAM for OLTP and 45% have deployed them for database and transaction-intensive applications. The same survey shows that 43% expect to deploy SSDs or DRAM for OLTP in 2012 to 2014 and 43% for database applications in 2012 to 2014. 29% are deploying SSDs to accelerate their throughput.
Kaminario's appliances use off-the-shelf blade servers, the SPEAR storage operating system and solid state drives and DRAM.
The company was founded by Dani Golan and Ofir Dubovi, both formerly of NICE Systems, in 2008. It has $34 million in funding from Globespan Capital Partners, Sequoia Capital and Pitango Venture Capital.
