Apple WWDC sells out in under 12 hours, iPhone 5 or not

And you thought the iPad 2 was selling out fast? Apple, which opened registration Monday for its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2011)  in San Francisco, sold out the event in less than 12 hours.

Last year, Apple WWDC took 8 days to sell out the event, which attracted 1,000 Apple engineers and some 5,000 developers for its iPhone, iPad and Mac devices.

Apple has specifically said that this year's event on June 6-10 at the Moscone West convention center -- which costs $1,600 to attend -- will focus on its iOS and Mac OS X software. 

It's widely expected that the cloud-enhanced iOS 5 will be introduced at the event, though possibly not offered until fall.  Apple earlier this month released iOS 4.3 for the iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet computer.

It is anticipated that the much previewed Mac OS X Lion software will be released during the event.

However, it remains unclear whether other typical WWDC happenings – an appearance by CEO Steve Jobs and the introduction of Apple's next iPhone – will be on tap. 

Some Apple watchers read into the fact that Phil Schiller, Apple's SVP of worldwide product marketing, was the one to announce WWDC 2011 might indicate Jobs won't be there. Though Jobs, who is on medical leave, did surprise some by making the formal iPad 2 announcement

Speculation swirled on Apple-oriented blogs Monday following Apple's software-focused WWDC announcement that no iPhone 5 announcement would take place at the event, a departure from recent WWDC agendas.

Apple at WWDC 2011 promises to hook up developers of iPad, iPhone and Mac applications with one another and to recognize the best designed and most innovative apps for Apple platforms.

Technical tracks at the event include Application Frameworks; Graphics, Media and Games; Developer Tools; Internet and Web; and Core OS.

The WWDC 2011 sellout isn't unprecedented this year. Google last month said its Google I/O event being held in San Francisco in May sold out in 59 minutes.  Google said it expects 5,500 people to attend the event.  Shortly after tickets sold out, some appeared for sales on eBay for quadruple face value  -- something we could see with WWDC as well.
