55% of Google Android smartphones use version 2.1

More than half (55 percent) of all Google Android smartphones use 'Éclair' or version 2.1 of the mobile phone OS.

According to figures released by Google, just three percent of handsets run the latest version of Android, which has been given the moniker Froyo. However, as the new version of Android has only been made available to Google Nexus One handsets, this is hardly surprising.

The next most popular versiuon is 1.6 Donut, which is used by 11.1 percent of handsets, while Cupcake, or version 1.5, is run by 18.9 percent of Android phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S is one of the handsets currently running Google Android Eclair

Its hardly surprising that Éclair is the most popular version of the OS as recent handsets including the Samsung Galaxy S and the Motorola Milestone are shipping with it.
