Not quite a year ago, Cisco, EMC and VMware joined together in a venture that integrated the respective vendor's Unified Computing System, storage and hypervisor into modular units called Vblock Infrastructure Packages. The goal, the trio said, was to accelerate deployment of virtualization and enable private cloud infrastructure.
Here's one sign that enterprises and service providers alike are buying into the idea of an integrated, modular unit for their virtual infrastructure needs: Nimsoft Tuesday announced that it has added Vblock adaptors to its unified monitoring platform. As such, users will get end-to-end performance and availability monitoring of network, storage, compute and application layers from the Nimsoft Monitoring Solution (NMS).
For Vblock customers, NMS will support proactive service-level monitoring, event correlation and analysis, and discovery of Vblock components, says Chris O'Connell, director of product marketing for Nimsoft. As such, when problems arise within the Vblock, users should be able to discover and address root causes quickly, he adds.
"The key to a Vblock is what's going on between the different components. So customers are interested in the 'sympathetic' problems that could happen in a Vblock," O'Connell says. "As VMware takes up and gets stressed and kicks in relief around UCS, how does that effect storage and power usage? It's the sympathetic type of triage they need as opposed to pointing traditional monitoring tools at a Vblock."
Converged infrastructure offerings such as Vblocks provide a great opportunity for network management vendors to deliver a similar approach with integrated monitoring, says Jim Frey, research director with Enterprise Management Associates. Nimsoft, a recent CA acquisition, has taken converged infrastructure management a nice step forward, he adds.
"There have been a lot of other tools out there for quite some time that could cover the different domains, but this is different in that it's coming pre-integrated and right out of the box," Frey says. "No configuration is required to build the representation of these three domains."
Nimsoft is offering complete monitoring for Vblock 0, Vblock 1 and Vblock 2, available immediately, as an NMS option. Customers can get an on-premises or software-as-a-service version, O'Connell says.
