Who knew Linus Torvalds had an LOLcats side?

And who knew it would prove so popular among techies?

You might think that the kind of people who follow Linux guru Linus Torvalds on Google+ -- or follow him anyplace online, for that matter - would not be LOLcats type of people. A clash of stereotypes, if ever there was one.

And, of course, you might think that Torvalds, a notorious crankypants, would not be an LOLcats type of person himself.

Turns out you'd be wrong on all counts.

This morning Torvalds, via his Google+ account, posted the picture you see here just crying out for an LOLcats treatment. And he offered the following explanation:

"What do you get if you have three girls and a cat? ... The thing that surprises me is how Minky could not care less. Apparently as long as we feed her, Tove and the kids can embarrass her as much as they like. Because Minky does love her food. That dress is looking a bit tight around her."

And the Google+ geeks who follow Torvalds lapped it up like Minky at her milk bowl: In just three hours, there were 400 Google+ "plus-ones;" 72 shares; and 79 fawning comments, a couple of the literally LOL variety. Oh, sure, there was a raised eyebrow or two -- and I'm not the only one who noted the incongruence -- but all in all it was a gang of techies just getting their too-cute-for-words-cat-pic "awwws" on.

Go figure.

(Update: Well, now, it turns out that he's done this kind of this before ... and in a blatantly calculating way, too.)
