Will.i.am to unveil new iPhone camera accessory this week

A new iPhone accessory from Will.i.am promises to turn the iPhone into a 14 megapixel camera

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, there is certainly no shortage of iOS accessories to choose from. But next week may see the introduction of a particularly interesting accessory. And believe it or not, the man behind this accessory is none other than Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am.

The Telegraph is reporting that the pop star has plans to release a piece of iPhone hardware that will "turn your smartphone into a genius-phone." That's quite a boast, but if you listen to Will.i.am tell it, the new accessory will transform the 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone into a 14-megapixel camera.

‘We have our own sensor and a better flash," Will.i.am explained. "You dock you phone into our device and it turns you smartphone into a genius-phone. We take over the camera."

Certainly intriguing, to say the least.

The camera will be the first of a series of digital products that bear his name – to support them, he has invested in what he calls ‘digital real estate’ online. He now owns the domain www.i.am. Users of i.am+ accessories will be given individual online profiles, for example www.i.am/Will.

The product will launch this week at a special event in London.

As for how he came up with the idea, it's an interesting tale, according to The Telegraph:

The multi-Grammy-award-winning singer and musician described how he came up with the idea for the camera attachment at a photo shoot in London in 2008. ‘I was just hanging out afterwards, and one of the models took an iPhone picture, which circulated the planet before the shoot was even over,’ he says. ‘I took one of the photographer’s lenses and held it up on my [phone] and said "imagine this one day." Then I said: “I’m going to do this”.'

And now he has.
