McAfee’s blog claims he’s been captured, but ...

Authorities in Belize proclaim no knowledge of any arrest

A blog being maintained by antivirus pioneer John McAfee and others is claiming to have received "an unconfirmed report" that McAfee has been captured. However, authorities in Belize say that report is not true and that McAfee, wanted for questioning as a "person of interest" after the Nov. 11 murder of his neighbor, remains at large.

(Dec. 6 update: This time he's really in jail.)

Here's the blog post:

captured

The post promised "more information as it is received," but that was as of early last evening and there have been no additional details.

Meanwhile, authorities in Belize are insisting that McAfee's whereabouts remain unknown to them. Peter Delevett of the San Jose Mercury News reports:

Cyberspace has been abuzz with reports that John McAfee - the elusive and eccentric Silicon Valley software magnate who's been on the lam since one of his neighbors was shot to death - has been captured. The flames were fanned by a post on McAfee's own blog, which somehow seems not to know where McAfee is; but some posters on the blog have been authoritatively stating that McAfee and a female companion were nabbed near the border of Mexico and Belize.

Cops in Belize City tell me they don't know anything about that, referring me to their counterparts in San Pedro, the beachside town some 160 miles away where McAfee has made his home in recent years. But Mayor Daniel Guerrero said: "It's not true." While he said rumors have been flying since McAfee gave a brief and bizarre interview to CNN, Guerrero said local cops have assured him McAfee's still on the loose. He added that police have been conducting house-to-house searches on the north end of Ambergris Caye, the island where San Pedro sits.

McAfee's Twitter account, which has been very active over his three weeks in hiding, has not been updated for the past 19 hours.

Believe what you will of the claims being made by McAfee and in his behalf. As this bizarre tale has dragged on, I have found it more and more difficult to believe anything he or they maintain. This could well be the latest episode in what seems to have been McAfee's on-the-lam performance art. Or maybe he's been captured. ... My money's on the former.

McAfee has made the point repeatedly that he has prepared voluminous materials to be posted on his blog in the event of his capture. I'm guessing that's the next step here ... and I doubt we'll be hearing anything directly from the man for some time.

(Update, 12:50 p.m.: McAfee's blog seems down at the moment. His Twitter account has yet to tell us which enemy of his is to blame. ... And at 2:15, the site is back up.)

(Update, 5 p.m.: Still nothing new from Team McAfee.)

(Update, 7:50 p.m.: There was a new post from McAfee's blog administrator, graphic artist Chad Essley, a short time ago and I'd link to it here if not for the fact that McAfee's blog seems to once again have been downed, presumably by one of his "enemies." The post said that Essley didn't know anything more about McAfee's whereabouts.)

(Update, 9:40: OK, the site is back -- sometimes -- but that post by Essley saying he knows nothing seems gone now. Makes as much sense as anything else about this.)

(Update, Monday, Dec. 3: A new "message to the media" adds nothing of substance. Bottom line is they are saying they don't know where he is.)

(Update, 8:40 a.m.: Suprise, surprise: McAfee not captured, says he's "safe.")
