Game of Thrones ad is TV advertising done right

HBO knows a thing or two about effective marketing

Game of Thrones is a wildly popular show on HBO whose third season is set to kick off on March 31. HBO has been advertising the series quite hard over the past few weeks, and we can expect those efforts to intensify as the third season premiere inches closer.

Earlier this week, HBO posted an advertisement in the New York Times that is remarkably clever and creative. If you've seen Game of Thrones, you know that dragons are forming an increasingly important part of the show's many story-lines. You know, the three dragons that Daenerys Targarayen, otherwise known as Khaleesi, gave birth to, right?

Okay, admittedly, if you haven't seen the show it all sounds rather bizzare, but per usual when it comes to HBO shows, the writing and storylines are top notch.

In any event, check out the extremely creative ad HBO layed down on the New York Times this week.

And as if that wasn't cool enough by itself, the spread above in the Times features fictional articles with titles like "The Lion of the Desert" and "Medea Resurrects at the Abuelitas." Too bad the shadow couldn't have been layed out over real articles, but this is still wildly fun and creative.
