Social media accounts for the satirical fake news site The Onion were hacked today by the hacker group the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).
The group posted "Syrian Electronic Army Was Heere[sic]" to the Facebook accounts of The Onion and Onion Sports, while several Tweets made mention of either the SEA or Middle East politics.
UN retracts report of Syrian chemical weapon use: "Lab tests confirm it is Jihadi body odor"— The Onion (@TheOnion) May 6, 2013
Meanwhile, the official SEA Twitter account tweeted a screnshot of a Hootsuite account controlling The Onion's social media accounts.
The SEA appeared to retain control over The Onion Twitter account at press time.
The attack is the second high-profile Twitter hack undertaken by the SEA in the past two weeks. In late April, the SEA was also responsible for hijacking the Associated Press Twitter account to send out messages claiming that explosions in the White House had injured President Barack Obama. The tweet immediately sent the Dow Jones plummetting by about 140 points until the AP was able to clear its name and the White House denied the report.
Twitter responded to that attack by providing a statement to Wired that said it is testing a a two-factor authentication process for its users and will release it shortly.
