Well, it’s that time of year again. The snow is finally off the ground in most of the New England area, opening day of Major League Baseball has come around, but most importantly, it’s Interop time in Las Vegas. This year’s Interop is about a month earlier than Interop of years past, but the activity from the show seems just as high. One of the more interesting announcements I saw from the first couple of days is Gigamon’s Multi Purpose Visibility Fabric Node.
Gigamon, the market leader in traffic visibility, announced the upcoming release of the GigaVUE-HC2 modular fabric node for the Services Layer of the company’s Visibility Fabric. The modularity of the product makes pervasive visibility easier to achieve. Today, visibility requires a number of different components, such as TAPs, packet modification, high-density ports, and intelligent packet modification.
Gigamon’s new GigaVUE-HC2 solves this problem with a modular product that can make it easier to deploy a visibility fabric in a highly complex network environment. The product is a compact 2RU, rack-mountable appliance, so it can be deployed in even the densest environments.
The node was designed with multi-purpose in mind and includes a number of capabilities, including internal TAPs, different port modules, and GigaSMART packet manipulation options. The product has a total throughput of over 1 TB in capacity and can handle almost any combination of 1-GiG, 10-Gig, and 40-Gig port speeds.
The GigaVUE-HC2 can be used to “future proof” IT operations, as businesses can deploy one of the nodes today and then leverage the modularity of the product as the environment scales or changes. The nodes are designed to plug into an existing visibility fabric, aggregate, replicate, and filter traffic flows from different networks, and then pass the visibility data to the various management, monitoring, or security tools that sit on top of the visibility fabric.
While there are a number of broad use cases for this product, the low-hanging fruit for the GigaVUE-HC2 is big data. While we’ve been talking about big data for a while, the trend seems to have really come alive of late as more businesses are looking at mobile computing and the Internet of Things. Success with big data requires the network and the underlying visibility fabric to be highly elastic, which is the primary value proposition of the GigaVUE-HC2.
Other interesting use cases would be monitoring complex environments as found in research centers and universities, highly secure environments like government agencies, heavily regulated industries like finance and healthcare, and wireless providers looking to understand customer information better.
Management stuff is never the sexy thing at Interop, as everyone wants to see the latest and greatest switch, server, or other IT component, but having pervasive visibility is one of the keys to a successful implementation of the sexy stuff, and matters just as much.
