Cisco No. 7 among green Fortune 500s

No. 12 on the national top 50 list from the EPA

Cisco Systems is No. 7 on a list of the leading green companies among the Fortune 500. Twenty-nine percent of Cisco's total electricity usage is from green sources such as wind and biomass, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its Green Power Partnership.

Intel is No. 1 at 51% electricity usage from green power sources such as biogas, biomass, geothermal, small hydro, solar and wind.The only other IT company in the top 10 is Dell, with 129% of its electricity use from green power. The number reflects the amount of green power as a percentage of total purchased electricity use. Those choosing to purchase green power in an amount exceeding 100% of their U.S. organization-wide electricity use are listed as such, the EPA list states.

Other IT and telecom companies in the top 25 include Motorola, Sprint Nextel, Advanced Micro Devices' Austin, TX, facilities, and Applied Materials.

Cisco is No. 12 on the list of the top 50 green power purchasers in the nation.
