QLogic, Pillar Data, HP make storage waves at Oracle OpenWorld

* Storage vendors target Oracle databases, applications

Oracle OpenWorld last week was a magnet for storage vendors intent on making their products work better with Oracle's databases and applications.

The show opened with a keynote from NetApp COO and President Tom Georgens, who underpinned how important storage is to Oracle users. Georgens highlighted how technologies such as thin provisioning and linked clones can help users save on storage expenditures.

Among the vendors that attended Oracle OpenWorld were QLogic, Pillar Data and HP, and each of them made product announcements.

QLogic announced that its Converged Network Adapters and 8GB Fibre Channel adapters and switches are now certified with Oracle. The Converged Network Adapter is one of the first Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) adapters to be used in servers that are part of the next generation transport protocol. The QLogic 8000 Series Fibre Channel over Ethernet adapter, the QLogic 2500 Series 8GB Fibre Channel adapter and the SANbox 8GB Fibre Channel switch are certified on Oracle Enterprise Linux versions 4.7 and 5.2. Additionally, the QLogic 2500 Series adapter is now certified with Oracle VM.

Compellent Technologies bolstered its Storage Center hardware array with support for Oracle VM software, which supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications. Oracle VM is open source server software that provides a GUI for managing and creating virtual server pools.

Pillar Data, a company funded by Oracle’s own Larry Ellison, was not silent at Oracle OpenWorld. The company announced several new application-aware storage profiles for its Pillar Axiom storage array. These profiles control and recognize the storage and performance requirements for a particular application such as PeopleSoft running on an Oracle database.

Finally, Oracle and HP announced a data warehousing appliance that will speed Oracle performance. The HP Oracle Database Machine, which consists of a grid of Oracle Database Servers and a grid of Oracle Exadata Storage Servers, offer 10 times the performance. The Oracle Database Machine is a grid of eight database servers that feature 64 Intel processor cores and 14 Exadata Storage Servers that include as much as 168 terabytes of raw storage. The Oracle Database Servers are interconnected with InfiniBand.
