Tumblr, Apple & You. Getting started.

Tumblrs about Apple, the iPhone & iOS: Clever. Entertaining. Insightful. Meaningful. Cool. Hot. Whatever.

Here are 10 Apple-related Tumblr blogs – you can think of them as The Best or The Top but they’re actually just The Random – with which you can successfully spend hours reading, ranting, and reblogging.

Things Apple is Worth More Than

Things Apple is Worth More Than

Are your Android-enthralled colleagues trashing Apple’s “lack of innovation” and “loss of market share” and smirking insufferably? The TAIWMT tumblr gives you all the information you need to demonstrate just how Great, how Magical, Apple truly is.

For example, Apple is worth more than 300 years of Irish beer consumption. And worth more than the construction cost of the entire U.S. Navy aircraft carrier fleet. And the entire 1977 U.S. stock market.

One drawback: unfortunatelty, blog owner Joshua Brown, a NYC-based financial advisor, hasn’t posted a worthmore since September 14, 2012, making the blog worth…well, less.

Samsung Copies Apple

Samsung Copies Apple

The tagline says it all, with plenty of ‘tude, dude. “I’ve had enough of Samsung ripping off Apple. You can call me iPierre.”

The proof you’ve been waiting for. Like Samsung Wallet copying Apple Passbook.

iPierre doesn’t just make this stuff up on his own. He goes hunting the length and breadth and depth of the Web for examples. He linked to this post at Forbes, which showed that “Apple gets robbed again in Las Vegas” with this image comparing Apple’s Siri icon with Samsung’s then-newly-announced voice recognition feature, S Recommendation. Shameless.

“Inspired” by Apple

“Inspired” by Apple

Should you think that Samsung is alone in this, the “I”BA tumblr proves otherwise, documenting how company after company actually relies on Apple for good ideas. Apple is practically a Technology Industry Public Service.

Exhibit Uno: The “innovative” gaming laptop, from Razer. As The Verge put it, Razer’s “outspoken CEO” (the best kind, obviously) “builds a MacBook for Windows gamers.” Don’t believe? Check out the Razer’s photo. And compare to this one of the MacBook. As “I”BA dryly commented, “One of these things is, in fact, quite like the other things,” nailing it by incorporating an ironic link to a YouTube clip of Sesame Street’s “Cookie Monster - One of These Things Is Not Like The Other.”

Jony Ive redesigns things

We’re not blind. Apple has foibles and faux pases and flubs and other f-things. You need a sense of humor, and a sense of perspective, to keep your sanity. JIRT has that, thanks to the puckishness of its owner, Sasha Agapov, @Agapov, a Los Angeles graphics designer.

He scours the Web for examples of how Apple Design SupremoCzarGuru Jony Ive would redesign everything if he could but get his hands on it.

How funny is it? It’s “hilarious,” says LaughingSquid. It’s “hilarious,” says BusinessInsider. It’s “hilarious,” says AppleTruthAndRumors.

High praise, indeed.

ONE iFINITE WATCH

ONE iNFINITE WATCH

The name is a play on Apple’s corporate headquarters address: One Infinite Loop. Clever, no?

The blog’s tag line explains it all: “Links to the most essential Apple news of the day in one place.” And that’s just what you get: A set of hotlinks to familiar (which apparently is what “essential” means here) news sites carrying posts about Apple, such as 512pixels, AllThingsD, AppleInsider, CultOfMac, DaringFireball, GigaOM, iMore, Macworld, stratchery.com, techcrunch and the like.

All right there on tumblr, in one place. Just like it says.

OMFG TECH

This is the Tumblr for “Thoughts, opinions, commentary, hyperbole and vitriol surrounding the world of Technology.”

Vitriol is the old-fashioned word for sulfuric acid (shown).

This Tumblr ranges over Tech in general but has plenty of TOCH and V for Apple. An example of the broader-than-Apple focus: advising newbie Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer that “Above all, however, what Yahoo really needs to do is shed the f***ing purple.” [no *** in the original]

On Apple news, OMFGT links to a recent The Verge screed by Joshua Topolsky, complaining at length about how stupid and ugly and dumb and weird and stupid the iOS 7 redesign is.

Deals on Apple Products

Deals on Apple Products

The URL puts this more clearly: “Apple on eBay.” Why pay full-price? You can buy a used or damaged Apple product, tinker a bit, and presto, you’re an iUser without the iPrice.

DOAP is a Tumblr digest of links back to the eBay pages for a variety of used Apple products. Such as “Apple iPhone 4 - 16GB - Black (AT&T) Water Damaged.” Each post shows a small photo, the current price and number of bids [“$115.00 (1 Bid)”], the end date [“Wednesday Jun-12-2013 22:03:56 PDT”], and links to “bid now” or “add to watch list.”

And we’re not talking about Stone Age Apple gear. Shown: “iPhone 5 32GB w/ cracked screen BLK Clean ESN.” A steal at…$275?

Freddie Harris is a “full-time consumer technology journalist [Features Editor at iCreate Magazine], sometime folk-rockstar, part-time beard enthusiast and rookie vegetarian.”

He tumblrs about all this stuff, but we liked how this part in his recent post – “Design is how it works” -- on Apple’s iOS 7 redesign:

“I came into the office after a few days off (which conveniently left time for the dust to settle after Monday’s announcement) and picked up an iPhone 5 running the developer beta of Apple’s latest mobile operating system. After a few seconds of tilting the device left and right, up and down, and observing the beautiful parallax animations, I’d decided on my hypothesis….”

That’s what “hands-on” means.

Phone Arts

Phone Arts

Phone Arts has been around for awhile. It has, like many tumblrs, a highly specialized focus. In this case, it is “an International collaborative project experimenting using only the mobile phone as the medium to create unique compositions. They explore the boundaries of the phone to create graphic illustrations and designs.”

Many of the images are various kinds of abstractions, some apparently created with pure color, others by manipulating photos.

The frustrating drawback: there is no, as in zero, none, nada, information about the images – about which phones or apps were used, or when they were done. No digest of information, no text about it. You’re forced to only, and simply, look.

Exposing Apple's Hypocrisy

Exposing Apple's Hypocrisy

This is an Apple-oriented Tumblr with a twist: the owner really, really hates Apple. The tag line:  “Exposing Apple’s hypocrisy and proving Apple for the lying hypocrites they truly are.”

This is a man with a mission. “The mission: to disprove Apple "Innovation" and show people what is truly behind the image of global technology giant Apple: a copycat and a hypocrite.”

You’re never in any doubt about who the Bad Guys are in technology.

Tumblr collects Apple immolations from around the web, such as this one  sourced from chris.millr.org, on how iOS 7 rips off Windows Phone. Other posts show how Apple is an indiscriminate ripper-offer, having filched freely from Android and Palm’s defunct webOS.
