Time to order a Tricorder

  • 1 of 6

When Star Trek was written in the 1960s the Tricorder, a hand-held, multi-function scanner and analysis device used in the series, was pure sci-fi. At the time, there weren’t many off-the-shelf sensors available, and those that were available had limited capabilities, were expensive, and were usually very large, so packing that much punch in a handheld device was pure fantasy. Today products that are Tricorder-like are readily available and real medical Tricorders are about to appear that will be much like the one that Bones McCoy waved around in the Enterprise sick bay. Beam me up, Scotty!
