Novell ships SP 1 for Suse Linux Enterprise 10


Service Pack 1 for Suse Linux Enterprise 10 includes virtualization, security, management, and support for new Intel and AMD processors.

Novell on Monday shipped the first service pack for Suse Linux Enterprise 10 that includes virtualization, management and security improvements.

The service pack also includes support for new processor technologies, including Quad-Core Intel Xeon and Quad-Core Advanced Micro Devices Opteron processors. Novell also has improved virtualization support and management and the operating system's auditing subsystem, and has updated its support of high-availability storage infrastructure.

Novell also has included desktop enhancements including expanded support for, the standards-based suite of productivity applications, as well as a preview of upcoming desktop virtualization technology and expanded integration features.

Novell also introduced its Virtual Machine Driver Pack, a bundle of paravirtualized network, bus and block device drivers. The drivers let users run unmodified Windows and Linux guest operating systems in virtual environments running on the Xen hypervisor technology integrated in Suse Linux Enterprise, as well as Intel Virtualization Technology and AMD Virtualization hardware.

The pack includes drives for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. It is slated to ship next month.

Novell said drivers for Version 4 and Version 5 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux will be released later this summer. There is no additional charge for those drivers. The pack is priced at $299 per physical server for as many as four virtual machines, or $699 per physical server for unlimited virtual machines.
