Alcatel-Lucent last week extended its IP/MPLS edge routing portfolio with new and enhanced products designed to increase network and service availability.
These products include:
* Release 5.0 of the Service Router Operating System (SR OS) for the company’s IP Service Router and Ethernet Service Switch (ESS).
* Release 5.0 for the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM).
* A six-slot, 80Gbps (full-duplex) chassis and switch fabric for the 7450 ESS.
* A new Ethernet and Multi-service Media Dependent Adapter (MDA) interface modules for the IP Service Router and ESS.
Release 5.0 of the SR OS is intended to improve the high availability features of the company’s IP Service Router and ESS. New features in this release address network scalability, availability and resiliency to help carriers meet service-level expectations from business and consumer customers.
Among the new features are Multi-chassis Link Aggregation (LAG) and Subscriber Routed Redundancy Protocol. These enhancements enable dual-homed links from any IEEE 802.3ad-compliant access device -- IP DSLAM, Ethernet switch or video-on-demand server -- to multiple Layer 2 or Layer 3 aggregation nodes.
Multi-chassis LAG provides synchronized and stateful redundancy for VPN services or triple play subscribers in the event of the access link or aggregation node failing, Alcatel-Lucent says. It is intended to help carriers delivering “always on” applications such as IPTV, VoIP or managed business VPN services, and improve reliability and resiliency across their IP networks to meet service-level agreements.
Other features of SR OR 5.0 are Pseudowire and Virtual Private Lan Services (VPLS) link redundancy. These capabilities extend link-level resiliency for pseudowires and VPLS to protect network paths against physical link or node failures, Alcatel-Lucent says.
These enhancements are also designed to enable the virtualization of redundant paths across the metro or core IP network to provide failover for point-to-point and multi-point connections and services. When deployed in conjunction with multi-chassis LAG, the path for return traffic is maintained through the pseudowire or VPLS switchover, enabling carriers to deliver “always on” services across their IP/MPLS networks, Alcatel-Lucent says.
Release 5.0 of the SAM is intended to facilitate multi-vendor, end-to-end service troubleshooting through third-party device configuration management and alarm surveillance. The 5620 SAM release 5.0 supports management of twice as many switches and routers as previously supported – as many as 480,000 ports.
It also supports automated tunnel and service creation, node-level back-up and software download, and time-of-day policy changes and OAM test generation, Alcatel-Lucent says.
The new six-slot 7450 ESS is targeted at locations requiring high availability, but lower aggregate bandwidth and interface capacity. It is optimized for point-to-point and multi-point Ethernet services combined with triple play aggregation and subscriber management.
The six-slot chassis joins Alcatel-Lucent’s existing one-slot, seven-slot and 12-slot variants.
The new interface modules for the ESS and IP Service Router include a combination Gigabit Ethernet/10 Gigabit Ethernet MDA and an Any Service, Any Port MDA.
The combination GigE/10 GigE MDA provides 1x10Gbps and 10x1Gbps Ethernet ports on a half-slot interface card. In one scenario, the Gigabit Ethernet ports could be used for aggregation of IP DSLAMs, while the 10Gigabit Ethernet port can provide a core network uplink.
In another scenario, the Gigabit Ethernet ports could be used to connect video servers in a Video Hub Office, aggregating traffic via the 10Gigabit Ethernet port downstream towards subscribers.
The Any Service, Any Port MDA is a four-port channelized OC-3/STM-1 module that terminates frame relay, PPP and ATM access circuits on a single interface, down to DS0 level. This allows fixed carriers to consolidate a mix of business services at the IP/MPLS edge, Alcatel-Lucent says, while enabling mobile carriers to transport ATM-based 3G voice, data and signaling traffic across an IP/MPLS backbone.
All products are available now, except the 5620 SAM release 5.0, which will be available in April 2007.
