Idera improves SQL Server backup

Start-up Idera announced today enhancements to its SQL Server backup and recovery software.

SQLsafe 2.0 provides encrypted and compressed backup and recovery of data from SQL Server implementations. Among the improvements to the product are enhanced performance and compression technology, reporting on service-level agreements (SLA) and a new Web console for monitoring backup and recovery activity.

Idera claims that by using new multi-threading and I/O technologies that the performance of the software is increased by 50% over previous software, allowing faster backups and recoveries of data. The company’s new compression technology samples that data that is scheduled to be backed up and automatically selects the best method of compression for it.

In addition, IT managers can define policies for backup and report on performance against established SLAs. A new Web console lets database administrators monitor backup and recovery operations remotely from any Web browser.

Further, SQLsafe 2.0 also provides administrators with the ability to create, schedule and execute backups from T-SQL scripts.

SQLsafe is part of a series of products designed to manage Microsoft’s SQL Server. The company is expected to announce software that allows IT administrators to archive SQL Server data for compliance purposes, says Rick Pleczko, president and CEO of Idera.

SQLsafe competes with Imceda’s Litespeed.

SQLsafe 2.0 is expected to be available this month starting at $995 per SQL Server instance.
