Seems the Internet enjoys funding whimsy: Last week it was potato salad; this week a record-breaking chain of temporary literary tattoos featuring every word of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

Danny Fein, CEO of Cambridge-based Litographs, explains the project in this short video, or you can read a description from the Kickstarter page right below.

We have taken the entirety of Lewis Carroll's most universally-loved book, “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,” and broken it into 2,500 individually designed temporary tattoos. Our goal is to recreate this iconic novel by showcasing every single word on the skin of 2,500 Kickstarter backers.

The first 2,500 backers will each be sent one unique, randomly-selected Alice tattoo phrase. Wait for your tattoo to arrive in the mail, apply it to your body, take a photo, and upload it to tattoos.litographs.com. Not only will you be making literary history, it will be a great excuse to re-read this timeless classic in a way that has never been done before.

The 2,500 pledged support – and more than double the company’s $7,000 goal – in no time.

But fear not those who did not make the first 2,500, as Litographs has extended the projecct so that the next 2,500 will receive a tattoo from “Through the Looking Glass.” Those photos will also be collected online, too.

Why “Alice?”

Fein told Boston.com: “The language is just so interesting and beautiful that you can take almost any snippet of text and there are no boring parts of the book.” He also said he thought the whimsical tale would resonate with consumers’ childhoods.

As I write, 4,782 people have signed on – and pledged $28,000 -- so if you want a piece of “Through the Looking Glass” you had better hurry.
