Where do IT pros do their social networking? That's what Network World wanted to find out when it conducted an online survey of 583 readers in January. We discovered that usage is way up compared to last year.

More IT pros visit social media sites

More IT pros visit social media sites

Only 16% of IT pros said they didn't visit social networking, social media or social bookmarking sites. That means 84% of our readers use these sites, which is up significantly from 68% last year.

IT pros favor LinkedIn

IT pros favor LinkedIn

63% of IT pros use LinkedIn, while 44% use Facebook. Both figures are up significantly from a year ago, when 41% used LinkedIn and 20% used Facebook.

Twitter is hot

Twitter is hot

14% of IT pros said they use Twitter, which wasn't mentioned in last year's survey. While Twitter is gaining popularity, news aggregation sites like Slashdot and Digg are losing IT pros as readers.

Spending more time interacting online

The number of IT pros who said they visit social networking sites several times a week jumped from 22% to 30%, while the number who said they used these sites every day rose from 16% to 20%.

Combining work and play

Combining work and play

A third of IT pros use sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Slashdot for both work and play. This compares to 37% who use them mostly for work and 29% who use them mostly for play.

64% of IT pros said they are using social networking sites more frequently than they did a year ago.

IT pros were split on this question. 40% disagreed or strongly disagreed with the idea that social networking sites increase productivity at work, while another 40% were neutral. Only 14% agreed with this statement.

Our survey respondents were 75% IT pros with networking expertise. The rest were consultants, corporate executives or other business executives.
