Which team does Hadoop think is the best in the March Madness tournament?
The “PageRank” column are MapR’s picks for the best teams, and they’re compared to the AP’s ranking in the adjacent column.
The company MapR – which makes a distribution of the open source Hadoop platform - ran some data to find out.

MapR says that too often fans filling out brackets have biases. Data-driven algorithms can help solve that problem.
The company used an algorithm based on Google search's page ranking index. The results show some interesting differences between the Associated Press’s ranking of the teams. Both PageRank by MapR and the AP both have the University of Kentucky being the top team in the nation. But PageRank - which takes into account all of a team's wins and losses throughout the year and ranks them based on other teams wins and losses - has Villanova being the second best team in the tourney; the AP ranked Villanova 4. Wisconsin - which is the sixth ranked team by the AP - is third, according to this Hadoop company.
So will Kentucky win it all? MapR says nothing’s a guarantee. “Despite our best efforts, there’s no foolproof way of picking winners even when the data tells us which one should. After all, that is why they play the games.”
