Padmasree Warrior, ex-CTO and strategy chief at Cisco Systems, has joined a Chinese electric car start-up competing with Tesla.
"I've always looked for opportunities to leverage technology to tackle big problems,” Warrior said in a statement. “Climate change and air quality are two of the most significant global challenges today. I believe that electric vehicles will play a major role in the overall solution. As the electric vehicle industry emerges, there is a tremendous opportunity to provide a user-centric transportation experience. By integrating advanced technologies in the mobile Internet era, NextEV will make electric vehicles an enjoyable experience in people's daily life.”
NextEV is headquartered in Shanghai with offices in San Jose, Munich, Beijing, Hong Kong and London. It was founded in 2014.
Warrior most recently was Cisco’s chief technology and strategy officer. She left Cisco in September, shortly after Chuck Robbins took over as the company’s new CEO. Warrior was believed to be one of several Cisco executives looking to succeed 20-year CEO John Chambers.
She joined Cisco in 2010 from Motorola, where she was executive vice president and CEO. She serves on the boards of Box, Gap and Microsoft, and now NextEV, and will be based in NextEV’s US headquarters in San Jose.
Warrior has been one of the most visible and recognized female executives in high tech. Forbes named her one of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women" for three years running; In 2013, The International Alliance for Women gave her the World of Difference Award; The Aspen Institute gave her the first Leadership in Science and Technology Award; India's National Association of Software & Service Companies (NASSCOM) named her the Global CTO Award winner; The Wall Street Journal has called her one of "50 Women to Watch"; Fast Company included her among the "100 Most Creative People in Business"; and The Economic Times listed her as "the 11th Most Influential Global Indian."
Omnipresent on Twitter, she was recently in the running to be Twitter’s new CEO. Twitter named Jack Dorsey its new CEO in October.
