Jitterbit raises cash, rolls out healthcare offering

Healthcare is an incredibly lucrative industry, and never more so than today. Jitterbit aims to get in on that with a tool to help exchange clinical data.

Jitterbit is one of an increasing number of vendors focused on integrating disparate software, data, and devices. It's an increasingly lucrative field as an ever-rising level of technological heterogeneity results in organizations having to contend with information from an ever-increasing variety of places. Whereas in the past even moderately large organizations would only have to think about a few individual systems, today the norm is to leverage a huge number of best-of-breed point solutions.

This is where companies like Jitterbit (and, it must be said, an increasing number of others like Dell Boomi, Mulesoft, SnapLogic, etc.) come in. Jitterbit's offering is built on the cloud and helps organizations connect and orchestrate data flows - not only between cloud and on-premises applications, but also devices and databases.

The company is today announcing a new healthcare offering as well as a fundraising. The fundraising sees Jitterbit scoop up $20 million by way of a Series B round led by KKR. The investment follows what Jitterbit is calling its biggest year ever. The company converted 11,000 new customers and 300 enterprise clients, including Chrysler, Jim Beam, Pinterest, Shell International, Tampa General Hospital, Time Warner, UCLA, and Virgin. According to the company, revenues grew by over 80%, but, somewhat unhelpfully, they won't divulge what that means in real terms.

On to the new product launch, the nattily named Jitterbit Healthcare Interoperability Platform is designed to help end users (healthcare providers etc) as well as healthcare content creators (medical device manufacturers, application developers, and EMR vendors) to automate and streamline operations by securely exchanging clinical data.

The timing of this move is excellent since, in the U.S. at least, new regulations require healthcare providers to shift from a fee-for-service to a fee-for-quality model, and to improve the patient experience with easy access to electronic medical records. To meet new regulatory requirements and provide a better patient experience, healthcare providers will have no option but to begin to think about interoperability between medical devices, EMR systems, and other healthcare applications. 

So, what is Jitterbit actually serving up that will be useful for healthcare organizations? The platform includes a number of varied solutions for accessing, mapping, and exchanging clinical data between specific applications and devices:

  • Interoperability for Connected Medical Devices: Connect various network-enabled medical devices to any major EMR, deliver patient data to the device, and send device data, such as ultrasound or CAT scan images, back to the EMR.
  • Connected Clinical Workflows: Automate clinical procedure workflows by populating procedure checklists with relevant patient data, including demographics, test results, and diagnostics; highlight any contraindications or missing data; and assign all necessary preparation and follow-up tasks to clinicians involved in the procedure.
  • Patient Interaction Platform: Populate a patient interface with clinical data. The platform allows patients to make appointments, view lab results, fill prescriptions, etc.

The actual integration tools that can be used consist of:

  • Jitterbit Master Healthcare Data Model: Leverages a canonical model that maps and transforms medical data, including patient demographics, into an industry-standard format that can be easily reused and represented to other systems and is compatible with SNOMED, HEDIS, and STAR metric standards.
  • Jitterbit Healthcare APIs: Provides real-time access to the Master Healthcare Data Model for providers and their trading partners and support for the standard, proprietary, and evolving API protocols like FHIR.
  • EMR Interoperability: Includes built-in interoperability with popular EHR and PMS software.
  • HIPAA Compliance: Keeps protected health information (PHI) completely secure and accessible only to properly credentialed users through a HIPAA-compliant platform.

All in all, it makes sense for Jitterbit to focus on this important and lucrative vertical. The integration space is increasingly busy and is messaging a particular solution to a particular vertical, Jitterbit will be able to give itself some more room to position. I'd be keen to see some solid case studies of healthcare organizations utilizing the platform, but at this early stage, it looks promising.
