Perhaps we should have taken a week off from the iPhone 7 Rumor Rollup and given Google its chance to shine during the week of its Google I/O conference in Mountain View, where the latest Android this and that will be touted. But the Apple rumor mill does not rest, so neither will we.

Connector rejector?

The iPhone 7 rumor mill for months has been buzzing with talk of Apple ditching the standard 3.5mm headset jack, but earlier this month the rumors reversed and everyone now thinks the jack will stay. The other sure thing was that Apple would be adding a smart connector, like it has on its iPad Pro for communicating with keyboard accessories, to the iPhone 7. But now that rumor is getting squelched as well.

The Japanese site Mac Otakara, as relayed by SlashGear, says the smart money is on the Smart Connector – whatever it was going to be used for – not being part of the next flagship phone.

Mac Otakara writes that Apple has apparently "shelved" the inclusion of a Smart Connector on the iPhone for now, although it's important to note that the feature was still firmly in the "rumor" category.

Other say the Smart Connector will be available on a new iPhone 7 Pro, but not on a more pedestrian iPhone 7. Renders posted on the site uSwitch show this to be the case.

Macworld isn’t giving up on the idea of a Smart Connector in the iPhone Plus, though, suggesting that such a magnetic addition could help users easily convert their devices into keyboard-equipped iPhone Pros.

“Ports are the unsung heroes of Apple’s biggest revolutions. We got USB with the iMac, FireWire and the 30-pin connector with the iPod, Lightning with the iPhone and iPad, and USB-C with the new MacBook,” Michael Simon writes on Macworld.

So, with rumors of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus coming in the fall, we’ll know soon enough if some more hero worship is in order.

Same old, same old

The French site NowhereElse has scored another leaked iPhone 7 image, this one suggesting that the iPhone 7 will look a lot like the iPhone 6 and 6s, with the exception being a rear camera slid over to one side rather than being smack in the middle of the top of the phone.

Boy Genius Report picked up on this leak from NowhereElse and declared in its article headline: “Leaked iPhone 7 design could be a big disappointment to some.”

However, another leak, this one to MacRumors and discussed on Cult of Mac, suggests a couple of improvements, including less ugly antenna lines and a camera that doesn’t bump out from the aluminum body. Cosmetic stuff, yes, but people are looking for signs of hope in light of flagging iPhone demand.

DBS Videography gets really creative with a flexible volume control button, 4K wraparound display, 24mp dual rear cameras and more in this snazzy iPhone 7 design concept video. The concept depicts style and muscle: 6GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage and a huge 5,000mAh battery all in a slender smartphone.
