Enterprise switches

Network World, 11/13/00

The award goes to Foundry Network's Big Iron 4000. While this switch scored an identical 9.6 to Hewlett-Packard's 9304 in a head-to-head switch review, we opted to name Foundry the winner, because HP licenses Foundry hardware for its product. We did not include in Best of Tests consideration the 20 switches we looked at in varying degrees in the Network World/Tolly Group SwitchMetric and Interoperability Study. The scoring for those tests varied too much from the Best of the Tests methodology.

Best of Tests Award winner: Big Iron 4000

Company: Foundry Networks, www.foundrynet.com

Date reviewed: July 31

Score: 9.6

Score above category mean: 1.11

Reviewer's comment: "We found the Foundry box to have all the components and capabilities that a network administrator would desire in a switch."
