There are countless sources of free IT training on the Internet, though quality varies greatly. Here's a list of sites recommended by Scott Turton, who runs a site called Computer Education, Training & Tutorial Resources at www.intelligentedu.com.

East-West Project: A collaborative venture of four Canadian provinces to put online a full free course on IT. The course offers five modules: Web Publishing, Graphic Design, Telecommunication Networks, Telecommunications and Computer Applications.

UniversalClass School of Technology: UniversalClass is the place to find students and experts on any topic. Their School of Technology has many computer-related and programming classes for free. These are online synchronous classes, meaning they start and end on a specific date. Students can obtain expertise, knowledge and a virtual classroom education for free.

Virtual Dr. Online Tutorials: A comprehensive collection of online "how-to" tutorials on the Web. Subjects include At Home; Handhelds/PDAs; Hardware; Internet; Operating System; Software; and Linux. Also check out their discussion forums and tips area covering Windows, Linux and hardware.

Java and JavaScript programming tutorials: Dick Baldwin's online Java and JavaScript tutorial lessons are designed to teach you how to program in Java and JavaScript. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced programming tutorial courses on Java are available, as are tutorials on XML and Python. Some of these are available as downloads. This is an excellent free training site.

IT papers: Billed as the Yellow Pages of white papers, this is a great search tool for accessing thousands of computer and technology white papers. It offers free, quick, logical searches.
