In your May 29 column you recommended using e-mail virus scanning at the gateway. What software do you recommend? I will be installing Exchange and moving my e-mail from my ISP in-house.
Trend Micro provides industrial-strength virus scanning at the e-mail gateway with its InterScan VirusWall. Sprint and other partners have signed on with Trend Micro. MCI Network Associates/McAfee also provide commercial-grade gateway-scanning products in their Netshield and Webshield. Netshield works with Windows NT and NetWare servers, and Webshield works with Simple Mail Transfer Protocol mail gateways and Microsoft Proxy Server. Other options include mail servers and gateway-scanning products from MicroWorld Systems.com, and the online scanning and e-mail gateway services provided by Technocom and CleanMail.com. Services like CleanMail and HouseCall from Trend Micro route your e-mail through their e-mail gateway and scan every message with up to four e-mail virus scanners. This could appeal to organizations that don't want to handle the job in-house.
In the end, even if you go with an e-mail gateway virus- scanning product, best practice seems to be including antivirus scanning at the workstation. A list of commercial antivirus software can be found at www.cerias.purdue.edu/hotlist under virus protection.
