Setting limits with Exchange
It seems like it is taking longer each night to get the Exchange server at my company to get backed up. We added an additional processor and memory but this didn't seem to help. In looking at Exchange Administrator, it appears that we have some users who have mailboxes that seem to be growing with no end in sight. Is there some way that I can control the size of the mailboxes?
Via the Internet
First, go into the Properties page on the private information store. You can put limits here that will alert users when their mailboxes have gone over a certain size. You can also pick a limit after which they will not be able to send mail. As a last resort, you can (though I wouldn't recommend it) set a limit that when hit will stop a user's ability to send or receive e-mail. Setting this feature at the information store level affects all users. You can override the settings at a mailbox level where needed by going to the limits page of each individual mailbox.
The Internet Mail Service (IMS) connector can also control the size of messages that are allowed to pass through it. This message size control is settable only at the connector level -- there is no option of overriding it at the mailbox level. You need to be careful when invoking this option as it runs independently of the information store settings mentioned above. In other words, it is possible to send a message to the information store that is larger than what can go out over the IMS connector.
