Wireless Wizards

Bob O'Hara is co-founder and director of systems engineering at Airespace, a leading manufacturer of wireless LAN equipment. With more than 20 years of engineering experience, he has played a significant role in the development of 802.11 standards and protocols. In addition to co-authoring The IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion, which has been called the definitive guide to developing 802.11-compliant wireless LAN systems, Bob currently chairs the IEEE 802.11m working group, which is focused on addressing the maintenance of the currently approved 802.11 standards. Bob previously chaired both the 802.11 revision task group, which produced the current 802.11-1999 standard, and the 802.11d standard group. He was also the technical editor of the original 802.11 standard.

Pat Calhoun is co-founder and chief technical officer at Airespace, where he is responsible for the design and development of intelligent wireless LAN solutions. He has extensive experience in the networking space, having worked at Sun Microsystems Laboratories and U.S. Robotics/3Com prior to Airespace. In addition, Pat is a respected leader within the IETF and IEEE, having authored numerous RFC specifications in the area of security, including extensions to RADIUS, various components of AAA, and the DIAMETER framework.

Bob Friday is co-founder and chief scientist at Airespace. Bob has over 15 years experience in the wireless networking field. Prior to Airespace, where he is responsible for the design of intelligent WLAN solutions, he was a chief engineer at Metricom. There his radio frequency expertise enabled the successful launches of two generations of the Ricochet wireless service.

Israel Drori is the executive vice president of corporate development and founder of Legra Systems. He has more than 20 years of experience and is the former CEO and founder of MeetU Inc., which was acquired by Polycom. Before co-founding MeetU, he was vice president of wireless access at BreezeCOM, where he repositioned the company as a leader in the wireless Internet access market, from a previously leading position in the wireless LAN market. Mr. Drori holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Dr. Vaduvur Bharghavan is the chief technology officer and Founder of Meru Networks. Dr. Bharghavan is a credited innovator in the field of wireless networking and mobile computing. His achievements include significant contributions towards the development of wireless medium access protocols and quality of service architectures for wireless data networks. Prior to co-founding Meru Networks, Bharghavan delivered a flagship carrier-class product to three global wireless carriers as founder of Bytemobile Inc. Bharghavan holds MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the department of EECS at the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.Tech Degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras.

Dan Simone is the co-founder and vice president of product management and marketing for Trapeze Networks. Before Trapeze, he was at Redback Networks, where his responsibilities included product definition, forecasting and determining business goals. A 20-year veteran of the networking and communications industries, Dan has worked in engineering, product management and marketing at several companies. Dan also co-authored the point-to-point protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and holds several patents. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago, and BSEE and MSEE degrees from Marquette University.

Keerti Melkote is vice president of product management and marketing at Aruba Networks, and one of the two original founders of the company. Most recently, Keerti held senior management positions at Tahoe Networks and Shasta/Nortel Networks. Prior to that, he worked at Cisco Systems where he was responsible for the definition and launch of Cicso's Catalyst 8500 line of campus switch routers. He holds an MSEE from Purdue University.

Paul Callahan is co-founder and vice president of marketing and business development at Propagate Networks. Prior to co-founding Propagate, he was on the board of directors at Talarian, a provider of real-time messaging and transaction software, which was acquired by TIBCO. He has worked at Nortel, Bay Networks and was the group director of IT research at Forrester Research. He holds a patent in optical switching systems, and a bachelor's degree from Hampshire College.

Seth Goldhammer co-founded Roving Planet in January 2001, and now coordinates the development and sales teams, and leads in Roving Planet intellectual property initiatives. Seth began his technology career as a network administrator for the University of California in Irvine. He has led two technology consulting firms as CEO. He has a master's degree from the University of Colorado, where he focused on technology and entrepreneurship.

Albert Lew is director of product management at Legra Systems. Prior to Legra, he was a senior product manager at Crescent Networks, and at Accelerated Networks. He began his career as a software engineer, working in various technical capabilities at Xylan, OPNET Technologies and Teradyne. Lew has been a speaker at 802.11 Planet (now Wi-Fi Planet), and has a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Michael Montemurro is a co-founder of Chantry Networks, and the company's representative for the Wi-Fi Alliance and IEEE 802.11 group. Prior to joining Chantry, Michael held the position of senior architect for the wireless PAN and LAN solutions group at Nortel Networks. He was also the chief architect for Nortel's eCustomer Care product line, coordinating global development efforts. Michael has a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Toronto, as well as a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Waterloo.

Luc Roy is the senior director of product management at Chantry Networks. With 17 years of data networking and wireless experience, he has spent half his career designing and consulting on networking projects around the world for enterprises and carriers. Before Chantry, Roy designed several large networks for Northern Telecom and Wellfleet Communications, including Bell Canada's HyperStream frame relay network.

Inderpreet Singh is the chief architect at Chantry Networks. With more than 10 years of networking experience, he is an active participant in standards processes and responsible for the technology integration, design and product architecture activities for Chantry's products. Prior to Chantry, Inderpreet worked at Enterasys Networks' security and mobility development group, at Indus River, and at Bay Networks. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Marcel Wiget is director of systems engineering at Chantry Networks. Prior to joining Chantry, Marcel was a senior software engineer at SpringTide Networks, where he also held the position of systems engineering manager. He has held senior engineering and consulting positions at Nortel, Bay Networks and Wellfleet. Marcel has a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.

Carl Blume is director of product marketing at Colubris Networks. Blume has held similar positions at start-up makers of networking equipment, including Paceline Systems, IronBridge Networks, Nexion and Proteon. He holds a bachelor's of science in electrical engineering and an MBA.

T.K. "Ranga" Rengarajan is the vice president of engineering at Pronto Networks, and has been building world-class software teams and technologies for over 16 years. Ranga was most recently Vice President of Engineering at Probix, responsible for software development and managed service operations for the world's first clientless enterprise post-delivery content protection products. Ranga has also worked at Slam Dunk Networks, Sybase and Digital Equipment. He has a number of patents, a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master's in computer-aided design from the University of Kentucky, and a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Madras, India.

Robert Myers is CTO and co-founder of Chantry Networks. With more than 15 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, he has extensive experience in launching new businesses, managing merger-and-acquisition activities, and developing OEM relationships. He played a key role in the design and implementation of the world's first large-scale Internet VPN for Southwestern Bell. He was the senior product architect for Nortel's Dial Access product line, and the merger-and-acquisition prime for the technical assessment and recommendation of Nortel's acquisition of APTIS.

Rohit Merha, a 20-year veteran of the networking and communications industry, heads marketing at Bluesocket. Rohit was formerly an executive with Nortel/Bay Networks, holding senior positions in product management, product marketing and international market development. He has worked at IdeaAssociates (provider of IP gateways and controllers to IBM mainframe and midrange environments), and has spoken at several industry conferences, including Wi-Fi Planet, NetWorld+Interop, and the Mobile Business Conference. He holds an MS in engineering management from BITS/Pilani, India, and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of International Management in Arizona.

Scott Haugdahl is the CTO at WildPackets, where he developed the expert system for the AiroPeek NX 802.11 wireless analyzer. He has more then 20 years of experience in the networking industry, is author of the book "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting," has taught numerous workshops, founded Net3 Group to develop expert system technology and tools subsequently acquired by WildPackets, and wrote numerous columns chronicling his troubleshooting experiences. Mr. Haugdahl holds a bachelors degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology.

Rich Swier is CEO of Highwall Technologies. He has more than 14 years of experience in the management and launch of successful technology ventures in telecom and enterprise software. Prior to Highwall, Rich served as president of Backsoft, which he led to acquisition in 2001. In 1994, Rich founded and operated one of the first ISPs, which was acquired by Comcast Cable in 1996. He served as general manager of the Online Services Division at Comcast, and led the deployment of the cable modem broadband networks until his departure in 1997.

Roger Durand Roger Durand is the Director of RF architecture at Propagate Networks. He brings over 20 years of design experience in the RF/wireless domain to Propagate. Prior to joining Propagate, Durand was Senior Architect in the office of the CTO at Enterasys Networks where he was responsible for RoamAbout products. In addition, he was part of Cabletron's advanced technology group where he was in charge of architectures for cable modems and physical layer products. He is a voting and active member in 802.11 and is a founding member and contributor of 802.16 WMAN. Durand was also the chairman of IEEE 802.14a Advanced Cable Modem Physical Layer, and the representative/liaison to CableLabs and SCTE-DSS. Prior to Cabletron he spent fifteen years at Lockheed/Sanders in several technical RF/wireless design positions, working on dozens of advanced communications and countermeasures, programs and projects. Durand has several patents pending relating to WLAN location and security.

Joel Vincent is Senior Product Marketing Manager at Meru Networks. Previously, he played instrumental roles in the founding of the Lucent Netcare network management software product line and the Netgear consumer networking products. He also helped CopperCom launch the first commercially deployed voice over DSL system and developed Conxion Corporation's managed hosting service suite. He has launched over 60 networking products and service. Joel has a BSEE degree from Massachusetts Institue of Technology.

Steve Smith is a senior system engineer with Meru Networks. He has over 20 years of experience solving real-world networking problems as a senior system engineer, system engineering manager and field product manager. Prior to Meru, Steve held positions at Trapeze Networks, Ixia, Alcatel/Xylan and Xyplex. He holds the CWSP certification and is working toward his CWNE.

Leonid Kalika is founder and vice president of product delivery at Strix Systems. Prior to his work at Strix, Kalika served as vice president and general manager of the mediation business unit at Vertel Corporation. His career includes time as vice president of engineering at The Alchemy Group, a technology development company, and senior positions at real-time systems engineering companies. Kalika holds an MS in Electrical Engineering from Kiev Polytechnic, Kiev, Ukraine.
