No surprises here. IT pros are saying that there is a problem justifying VOIP costs (ie. costs exceed perceived benefits), voice quality is likely to be worse than their current PBX, VOIP is less secure, less reliable and more support intensive.
Re: VoIP deployments on the rise.
The real question is 'what are the real, quantifiable benefits of VOIP'if any? Nobody in the VOIP game dares to ask that question.

Cost Justification for VoIP
There certainly are long-term cost justification for VoIP and a business case can easily be made. What can't be said is that there is justification for replacing a supportable and working system not yet due for replacement; e.g., not fully depreciated.
Voip Benefits
The main business driver for VOIP is the BCP Benefits, accompanied with Telco, dialtone resiliency options, CCM Telephony users can work anywhere virtually, in a mormal business case, or in a DR scenario. With CCM extensions are not limited to a particular location, as long as the internetworking infrastructure is in place
My cable company provides
My cable company provides Voip phone service. The advantage for me: it's cheaper.
But:
It gives me exactly the same functionality as a regular phone line.
Why
A) Doesn't it give me the option of calling/receiving calls when I'm on the internet somewhere else.
B) doesn't it allow me to call to skype and sip phones for free? It only allows me to call regular phone numbers. I know skype is not an open protocol.
Such options would give real cost savings, because calling costs could go down.
Cost of VoIP Deployments...
As a VoIP Solution Provider I can tell you that we hear all the time that cost is a issue. The problem is not the cost, the problem is not knowing about the resources available to your company! Most of our customers lease instead of shelling out the big bucks for the VoIP Solutions that they need.
The great thing about leasing is you do not have to put out a ton of money to get what you need. Depending on what type of lease you get you can typically write off 100% of the payments on your taxes! This allows most companies to keep the initial capital that they would have put out!
