Microsoft's Origami Project is …

By Paul McNamara on Thu, 02/23/06 - 5:07pm.

(There's a Buzzblog March 9 update on Project Origami here.)

They're asking the question over at Scobleizer … and Microsoft's Robert Scoble isn't offering more than hints. Visitors are just guessing.

The Origami Project's teaser of a Web site offers even less … but does have an RSS feed.

Fortunately, we know someone who knows for certain. According to an industry source who has seen the thing and calls it "very cool," Origami is one and the same with this ultraportable "lifestyle PC" we were talking about here earlier today. This source is under NDA, an honest fellow and unwilling to share more than his help connecting the dots.

Earlier this month, the author of a blog called Engadget described the device this way: "According to at least one report, Bill Mitchell, Corporate Vice President of the Mobile Platform Division, showed a slide that outlined specs for the new PC category, including that it be wearable, always on, no larger than 10-inches, connected through 3G networks, pen-based, and have a suggested retail price of $500 or less. … One notable spec that could differentiate this one: Microsoft is apparently insisting that this run the full version of Windows."

The Origami Project Web site promises there will be news March 2.

UPDATE: Check out this post for new details, including a video clip.

You need an RSS feed!

Hey, Paul -- I came to check out your blog based on your plea in your NWW column -- and though it was interesting enough that I should subscribe to it so I could follow it regularly and easily. But I find you have no RSS feed, shame on you! Go bug your Ceonex Web Development folks (at least, that's whose name I see as the guilty party down in the footer of this page) and make them get with the program. Especially for a tech industry publication, you need to catch up with your peers.

So, having said that -- nice blog! I've bookmarked it, but bookmarks get lost easily, and I seldom go through them to periodically revisit sites, so I may not be back for a little while. If it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate a short email note when your RSS feed is up and working.

Thanks!

WDave

We got yer RSS feed right here!

Blame me, not Paul, for leaving it at the bottom of Paul's blog (the Drupal default) rather than adding an orange button higher up.

Microsoft's Origami Project...

I'm wondering if MS is working with Vulcan (Paul Allen's company) or against them on this? Vulcan has their own hand-held coming out: http://flipstartpc.com/default.asp.

Thoughts?

This reminds me of all the hype leading up to the Segway launch.

Also, went to the website and it says learn more 3.2.2006. Drat, I must have missed it as I didn't go to the website yesterday.

The Segway launch?

The hype leading to Ginger, you say. Gotta admit I may have played an itty-bitty role in that one myself: try “Don’t dismiss ‘What is it?’ mania” and “Your thoughts on Ginger” and “Think of the possibilities” and “Soul of Kamen’s new machine”. … Origami hasn’t quite reached that level … yet.
