Microsoft wants to pimp my what?

By Paul McNamara on Wed, 06/28/06 - 11:56am.

Pimp my office, apparently -- yours, too -- according to an anonymous comment attached to a blog entry that was written by an anonymous Microsoft employee (hey, at least you know my name -- blame me if this turns out to be a crock).

The pimping episode, presuming it happened, shows an alarming lack of workplace judgment on someone's part and has bubbled up in all the blog chatter over the sudden, unexplained departure/dismissal of Microsoft Windows Live marketing executive Martin Taylor, a longtime protégé of CEO Steve Ballmer. Speculation as to the reason for Taylor's disappearance has been feverish across the Web, no more so than on the notorious blog Mini-Microsoft, which is written by an anonymous Microsoft employee who generally has little good to say about company management.

Here's the blog reader's pimp tale in its entirety:

"I'll give a hint as to one reason Martin was fired. Let's just say it partly had to do with the phrase 'Hey Windows Live! Come pimp my office!' Or did everyone not notice those posters with that phrase went up on Monday (June 19) everywhere on campus, he was fired on Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning all the posters and the million little cards they were distributing with that phrase were mysteriously gone? (I kept one though. I knew when I saw it someone was going to get fired for that.)"

Now the anecdote could be pure fiction, but I'm guessing it's not, the ring of truth being my only guide.  And for the uninitiated, "Come pimp my office" is a play on the title of MTV's auto-customization program called "Pimp My Ride."

While the latter may not raise an eyebrow in the anything-goes world of cable television, the word "pimp" doesn't belong within a country mile of a Microsoft product release, or plastered across any workplace given the social and legal realities we live under today (it's hackneyed to boot). It's easy to envision a more-level-headed executive catching a glimpse of the pimp posters, gagging on his or her morning cruller, and ordering a clean sweep of the offending literature lest anyone make a beeline to the HR department.

So what does Microsoft have to say? Did anything like this happen? Knowing that the company has put a lid on official comments regarding Taylor's departure, I was careful to stress in my inquiry to Microsoft's public relations arm that my primary aim was to determine whether or not the pimp poster episode actually happened or not (oh, sure, I also asked if it had anything to do with Taylor's brooming; it never hurts to ask). Anyway, here's the gibberish I got in reply to my questions:

"We do not have any information to share at this time, as we make it a policy not to comment on rumors and speculation," said a Microsoft spokesman.

Rumors and speculation? The pimp posters happened -- at Microsoft -- or they didn't. It's a simple yes or no question. And while I cannot be certain that the question ever actually reached anyone at Microsoft who was in a position to know for certain, the squishiness of the reply does nothing but buttress my belief that the poster episode probably did happen.

But some of you out there know for certain, or know someone who would know.  Maybe the person who left the comment on Mini-Microsoft would like to share that copy he saved. Drop me a line, folks. The address is .

(Update: Oh, those fun-loving, double-entendre artists at Microsoft are at it again. This time they want their partners to "GET SOME ACTION.")

Yeah it happened. I managed to grab one of the posters before they were removed. They were not offensive, just STUPID, like most of the internal posters, placards, cafeteria table-pollution, etc.
Not likely it was the sole cause of Taylor's sudden departure, but maybe just another straw.

You grabbed one?
