Paul McNamara

How does your name measure up?

By Paul McNamara on Mon, 08/14/06 - 12:54pm.

This exercise in idle curiosity has caused two separate stretches of unabashed idleness here at Network World, so I figure it's time to share: Want to know how common your surname is relative to the 55,000 most popular in the U.S.? You can get the answer here. It's not a list. You plug in your name and get a number, such as, McNamara: 1,220. No. 1 is Smith No. 2 is Johnson No. 4 is Jones No. 5 is Brown I could not for the life of me guess No. 3 (until a member of the No. 5 clan figured it out.) Perhaps you can do it without help. And despair not if you don't register in the top 55,000; we had a couple of staffers suffer that rude awakening.

How can that be?

I'm just astounded that Gibbs outranks McNamara ... and by such a wide margin, no less. Why I've never met a Gibbs aside from the one with whom I've shared a page of this magazine for ... how many years has it been now? But I've met hundreds of McNamaras, and not all of them at weddings, funerals and family reunions. Gotta be something wrong with the database.

Actually a few NW folks are, so to speak, above you:

Shaw = 141
Francis = 407

While others are "below":

Dix = 3,204
Gallant = 3,272
Gaffin = 34,934

As for Gibbs, it is a very common lowland Scots name -- should you feel so inclined open the Glasgow telephone ... you will find pages of my kin. As it is so cold over there we've all migrated to the US ...

Fasimpaur.

Of course, that's just a guess, being as I'm surely well outside the chosen 55,000!

Shocked!
