10 years later, and still so far to go

Network World story package looks at IT and emergency response systems at the tenth anniversary of 9/11

It's hard to believe it has been 10 years since the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 claimed so many lives and changed our society forever.

For businesses, the issue of disaster recovery became a focus after the attacks, as they struggled with the question of how to carry on after the worst happens. Ann Bednarz this week talks to IT professionals about how IT has changed in the 10 years since 9/11, how the effects are still being felt.

For emergency services, the disaster made it clear that the current emergency response systems needed an update. Ten years later, it seems the United States is finally getting serious about a comprehensive overhaul.

Carolyn Duffy Marsan looks at the deficiencies in the current systems, but also details how IP and other standards are helping to usher in Next-Generation 9-1-1 for systems that can accept texts, photos and even video that can help first responders. She also zeros in on a new standard for determining the location of origin for calls placed over the Internet.

Lastly, Paul McNamara used the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to find samples of what news sites looked like as they covered the events of 9/11, before the era of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
