Aerospike wants to rocket to the top of the NoSQL big data market

Citrusleaf relaunches with acquisition of AlchemyDB

The Big Data space promises to be a huge bonanza for the companies that emerge as the leaders. One segment of the Big Data market that is really red hot is the NoSQL market.

Companies like 10Gen, Couchbase, etc. are startups in that space competing with old-line database companies like Oracle. But there is still time for new companies to emerge as winners. A couple of Silicon Valley-based VCs are making a bet on another NoSQL player. Aerospike, formerly Citrusleaf, is re-emerging with some fresh capital, a new acquisition, advisers, and a new attitude.

I had a chance to sit down with Srini V. Srinivasan, founder and VP of engineering and operations at Aerospike, along with Don Haderle, who is known as the “Father of DB2." Srini and Don are really excited about all of the good news coming out of Aerospike, and you can feel the energy coming from these two men about the company.

Some of the recent news at Aerospike:

  1. Free Community Edition of Aerospike. While not open source, it is a free, feature-rich edition of the product that will suffice for many potential users.
  2. Acquisition of AlchemyDB "NewSQL" database - not only did they acquire the IP for Alchemy, but the "brains" behind the company has joined the Aerospike team.
  3. NEA leads new round of investment in Aerospike and Don Haderle joins as advisor - New Enterprise Associates (NEA) has led the Aerospike Series B funding round and was joined by existing investors Draper Associates and Alsop Louie Partners. Additionally, Don Haderle, the father of IBM DB2, has joined Aerospike as a company advisor.

On top of this Aerospike has an impressive list of customers who are relying on the product for its ultrafast performance in mission critical situations.

You can listen in to my conversation (about 15 minutes) with Srini and Don below. Don, in particular as a database industry legend, is well worth the time to hear his insights and views.

As someone who remembers when the search industry was dominated by names like Excite, Alta Vista and Infoseek, I know for sure that it is not too late for someone to come in here and grab the golden ring to dominate the NoSQL market. Aerospike, which is the tip of a rocket, has the pedigree, drive and fuel to perhaps be that company.
