Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh has named Professor Frank Pfenning as head of its Computer Science Department, replacing Jeannette Wing, who recently was named head of Microsoft Research International. Pfenning will lead a faculty of 70+ members.

The German-born Pfenning, who played a key role in CMU's recent refresh of its introductory computer science curriculum, earned his doctorate degree at CMU. His research focus on applications of mathematical logic in computer science, according to the school.
