Cisco this week unveiled new and enhanced products for its IP video surveillance camera line that might appeal to municipal safety and law enforcement agencies, and third-party partners.
Cisco said it is extending its Medianet video architecture for the first time to certified video surveillance partners to allow Cisco-based networks to automate recognition, configuration and monitoring of service levels for third-party IP cameras. This will be enabled through the Medianet Services Interface software, the company said.
VideoIQ, a maker of distributed storage surveillance products, is the first camera vendor to publicly announce its intent to embed Medianet Services Interface software into its cameras.
Cisco also said it will roll out new and enhanced products intended to foster interoperability between the real time communications systems used by firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians and public safety officials. Cisco says that many times these emergency responders communicate on different systems and radio frequencies, which can impede efforts to devise a coordinated and timely response during crises.
The third-party support is embodied in Cisco's Video Surveillance Manager 6.3.2 software. The software supports what Cisco calls "extended edge storage," which extends VSM to edge of the network to manage offload. VideoIQ's iCVR-HD camera and onboard storage are already integrated into VSM.
Cisco also unveiled a high density physical security storage platform with the ability to manage video recording of up to 120 terabytes of storage, and 60 disks in 4RU of rack space; and up to 240 terabytes, and 120 disks in 8U of rack space. Cisco also supports ONVIF 2.0 streaming video in VSM, which allows customers with third-party cameras to retain existing investments in those deployments while perhaps expanding them with Cisco cameras and associated products - like VSM.
For emergency responders, Cisco says it can demonstrate IP-based interoperability between P25 radio networks and IP networks using gateway capabilities and a universal media services appliance. P25 is designed to provide improved coverage, enhanced interoperability and more efficient use of radio spectrum than traditional analog systems.
Cisco also unveiled 4- and 8-port standalone analog-to-IP video encoders to migrate existing analog customers to IP video.
