Mobile shoppers did their part: 10.8% of online shoppers used a mobile device to visit a retailer's site on Cyber Monday, up from 3.9% a year ago. In terms of money spent, mobile sales as a percentage of total online shopping sales reached 6.6%, up from 2.3% in 2010.

Cyber Monday's shopping surge came on the heels of a strong Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Online retail sales jumped 39.3% on Thanksgiving, compared to last year's single-day holiday total. On Black Friday, online sales climbed 24.3% compared to the same day last year, IBM reports.

Cyber Monday falls on the first business day of the week following Thanksgiving. Last year, online sales on Cyber Monday exceeded $1 billion, according to comScore. (comScore hasn't yet released a final tally for this year's Cyber Monday sales.)
