One would hope that this is a hoax, because the alternative is that an 8-pound newborn baby girl has entered this world burdened by the name Hashtag.
Although as you'll see in a moment, burden is in the eye of the beholder.
An alleged Facebook photo of the purported baby Hashtag was apparently posted to a site called Awkward Messages, which is devoted to collecting such treasures. It reads: "Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last nite. She weys 8 pounds and I luv her so much!!!!!!"
If that message was from one of the parents, then I suppose we cannot rule out the possibility that Hashtag is a misspelling of some type.
Meanwhile, Hashtag Jameson's parents (so far out of the limelight) are taking a predictable drubbing for their name choice.
Not from all quarters, however. Chris Messina - father of the lowercase hashtag; he literally coined the word -- prefers to look at the upside for the youngster: "I don't know who she is, but I'm happy to welcome #Jameson to the world," Messina, who works at Google, wrote on Google+ in reply to my prompting. "I suppose this way they'll never need to secure their username on any future social network; they'll always just be #Jameson ! ;)"
Here is Messina's welcome photo, adopted from Gizmodo's harsher assessment.
I suppose it #CouldBeWorse.
