Google Science Fair back for 2nd year

2012 global online Google Science Fair targets budding scientists age 13-18

Google, joining forces with CERN, The LEGO Group, National Geographic and Scientific American, has announced the 2012 Google Science Fair, an online competition open to 13-to-18-year-olds around the world. Budding scientists can submit projects (pose a question, develop a hypothesis, conduct science experiments to test it) as individuals or in groups of up to three people. The deadline is April 1 and parental consent is required.

Prizes include a $50,000 college scholarship, a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands and more.

Judges include Google VP and Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf, CERN Director Steve Myers, oceanographer Sylvia Earle and others.

The top 3 2011 Google Science Fair winners -- all girls -- were recognized for innovations in areas such ovarian cancer research and lung health as well as making grilled chicken safer to eat. The science fair attracted more than 7,500 entries from 90-plus countries.

Last year, only English submissions were accepted, but this year submissions will be accepted in 13 languages. 90 regional finalists will be announced in May, 15 finalists will be announced in June and winners will be unveiled July 23 in Mountain View.
