Google Code-in 2011 Contest Gears Up

Google unveils the 18 open source organizations participating in contest for teens.

Yesterday Google unveiled the 18 open source organizations participating in the 2011 Google Code-in contest for 13-17 year old students:

• OpenSUSE
• Parrot Virtual
• PySoy Game Engine
• RTEMS
• Sahana Foundation
• Sympy
• The Perl Foundation
• Tux4Kids
• VideoLAN

The contest, which runs from November 21, 2011 to January 16, 2012, is a Google effort to introduce pre-university students to the different contributions involved in open source software development. Google invites students worldwide to make contributions to open source projects, including code, documentation, outreach, quality assurance, research, training, translation, and user interface design.

Gnome, for example, has fix tab appearance in Anjuta as one of the code task proposals for the contest. Under documentation, Gnome proposes six tasks, including improve the Evolution user documentation and help create documentation for gnome-sudoku. Under outreach, Gnome proposes task such as improve the Gnome article on Wikipedia and update Gnome website.

Last year, more than 360 students from 48 countries completed more than 2,000 tasks during the 2010 Google Code-in contest. Fourteen finalists won the Grand Prize. Finalists were flown to the Google headquarters in Mountain View and spent the day with engineers.

Winners of the 2011 Google Code-in will be announced on February 14, 2012, on a blog post.
