Open Source CMS Continues To Dominate

Familiar names but new trends underlay new state of the market report

It is that time of year again. No, not the holiday season, but time for water&stone’s annual report on the state of the open source CMS market. Once again the report highlights what a strong lineup of open source CMS solutions are available. The folks at water&stone looked at 35 open source CMS, but only picked the top 20 for the report. Again another indicator of the vibrancy of this market.

At the end of the day though, the top twenty stayed the same as the top 20 from last year. The big three of WordPress, Drupal and Joomla! retained their large lead at the top of the pack. However, according to the report the market did not remain static. Beyond the façade there were some interesting trends to watch.

The biggest news perhaps is that while Joomla! while still one of the big three, is trending down. This could be disturbing for Joomla! supporters. With so many worthy competitors biting at their heels, we could be seeing them lose their dominant position in the not too distant future. WordPress on the other hand seemed to consolidate its position as the undisputed leader in the market.

Digging in a bit deeper, within the .Net space, DotNetNuke is still the king of that hill. Umbraco made a strong push last year and seemed to be gaining on DotNetNuke. But DNN with a strong year including several acquisitions seems to solidifying its lead in that .Net market.

In the Java SCM space, Alfresco seems to be locked in a life and death battle with Liferay.

The big winner for this year though seems to be Concrete5 who had a tremendous year of growth. The report authors caution that this could be the result of underreporting them last year, but it seems clear that no matter how you slice it, it was a great year for Concrete5. Another winner this year was MODX which saw their numbers grow as well.

Big losers for the year seem to be e107, Movable Type, Textpattern and Xoops. Movable Type, once a key competitor for blogs to WordPress is particularly down and appearing on the way out. What a shame, as I always like MT.

Overall it was somewhat surprising to me that even WordPress and some of the other leaders actually saw their download numbers go down this year. But in terms of what system are you using now, the numbers were more reflective of market share I believe. It also shows some of the bad news for Joomla!

CMS is one market where open source clearly dominates. However, it is not the only one. Kudos to water&stone for once again shining a light on this dynamic and exciting market.
