So long 2010, welcome 2011 …

2010 year end summary

By Avner Izhar on Sun, 01/02/11 - 6:29pm.

A year has passed and it is time for a short summary of this blog and the world it resides in.

Starting with the most popular posts of this year:

the most accessed one was:

First look into Call Manager 8.0, point taken and the one for version 8.5 is in the make.

Second place goes to:

A Cisco IPhone app that is worth sharing

Third and forth were:

Mobility and Single Number Reach - quick config instructions and Cisco VPN client autoconnect

Both from 2009, but apparently still relevant ...

Overall, it has been a busy year for IT, less working hands, more projects and in some sectors amazing growth.

The company I work for (World Wide Technology) celebrated its 20th anniversary this year with an amazing year, full of achievements, awards, and success. It has been very busy but the efforts were fruitful.

More on World Wide Technology can be learned in Bob Olwig's (our V.P. of Corporate Business Development) Blog: Perspectives on Technology & Business and on the company's web site www.wwt.com .

It is hard to point out a single product that was the most significant in 2010, the one I specified in 2009 (Cisco UCS) was very significant in 2010 as well, with coalitions formed with VMware+EMC and VMware+Netapp and with partnerships being broken with HP and others.

If one has to point out something, it feels that this year was the social networking year, where it moved from the social only/after work side of things to the business relevant side.

My reasoning for that is coming from multiple sources, some example are:

  • IT departments are being asked to loosen their web browsing policies and allow facebook, linkedin and youtube.
  • It is almost impossible to separate personal from professional, I used to have linkedin for business and facebook for personal activities but the distinction is becoming difficult to preserve.
  • Most big vendors now have a facebook fan page which offers unique content and that is an indication of the significance social networks have.

Do you agree or is there something a lot bigger that I missed?

Without making a fool of myself by predicting too much, I will end it here, looking for 2011 with cautions optimism, hope it is going to be great for all the hard working IT related area of business.

Finally, here are some noteworthy newyear quotes:

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland

New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions. ~Mark Twain

Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account. ~Oscar Wilde

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey
