Whatever happened to our WAN Optimization throw down from two years ago?

Why we will never see a vendor test at Interop.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Thu, 01/28/10 - 7:29pm.

Do you remember back in April of 2008 when I put a challenge out to Cisco, Blue Coat, Riverbed and Juniper for an old fashion throw-down at Interop? Well I have never forgotten and am still hopeful that it will happen one day, but then I woke up from a dream. Interop is the best place for a test like this and everyone knows it.

10Gbps Routing + Security for under $5k, and it's not from Cisco or Juniper

Vyatta is putting the pressure on large vendors, when will customer give them a chance?
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Sun, 01/17/10 - 10:19am.

Vyatta has been out for some time and has been doing a good job at providing open source routing and switching to the masses. They have been besting Cisco in the branch/data center space with a better product and price, now they have brought that to the enterprise and service provider space with the release of the 3500 Series Router/Firewall.

In this blog we are going to take a look at a comparison between Cisco and Vyatta on price and technical specifications, then ask why are companies not saving money with Vyatta?

The Vyatta 3500 Series Router and Firewall:

Staying a Cisco Channel Partner is a tough choice.

If Cisco is losing market share and has constant turn over, it makes me wonder
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Sun, 01/10/10 - 11:41am.

Over the last six months I have been wondering what I should do as a company with our Cisco partnership. To be honest, Cisco is not the easiest company to work with as a partner and that bothers me. I have sent a few emails to people at Cisco and two executives with no reply back other than an SMB Account Manager.

Top 10 areas that CIOs needs to focus on for 2010

When image is everything, what areas should CIOs set their sights on?
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Tue, 12/15/09 - 7:18pm.

I speak to executives from all over the world and the question I've been asked a lot in the past two months is “Larry, how can I improve our image?”   Image is everything, I tell my customers, and it is a reflection on your management style. It makes no difference if you are a CIO or in sales, whatever your area your work is a reflection on you and your skills. Given this, I've come up with a list of the Top 10 Areas That CIO should focus on in 2010 to improve their images, and ultimately, their departments.

It’s the discount game, have you been caught up in it and made a huge mistake?

Why discounts are not the best reason to buy a product.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Tue, 11/17/09 - 5:06pm.

So it is Interop time in New York City and I was not planning on attending as I have been busy with customers. But, as it happens, I am in New York this week presenting to customers. So, I was asked to come and have breakfast with a group of CXOs (four CEOs, two CFOs and seven CIOs) from New York, and enjoyed a good conversation with them. One of the topics of discussion: discounts.

Did Cisco learn from its press mistakes from the last Cisco Live event?

No press info found on 2010 Cisco Live page.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Tue, 11/17/09 - 10:16am.

I received the e-mail below as a Cisco Partner, but I am wondering if Cisco will learn from its press mistakes from last year? You all remember when this was an invitation only event and the press did not get invited even if they were paying their own way to cover the event.

Is LinkedIn's new save profile feature worth the upgrade fee?

What would make you pay $24 to upgrade from a service you otherwise get for free?
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 11/02/09 - 11:47am.

LinkedIn has added a new feature to all profiles that it calls “save----profile.” This allows you to add the profile to a list you have created or one that LinkedIn has created. You can also add some notes.

Below is a screen shot of what the new feature looks like. You can have it for 30 days free, but if you like it, you'll have to pay for the upgrade to continue to use it.

My misadventures with an AT&T 3G card in New York

Verizon is going to be my next choice.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 10/26/09 - 1:57pm.

I have been traveling with my AT&T 3G card for a while now and it is always a horrible experience when I travel to LA, NY, Chicago and DC. It works fine when I am in my home city, connects every time and the speed is ok (but not close to 3G speed). But I was just in NY again and could not even get data when using it.

Lawsuit over Magic Quadrant raises questions

I say one person's opinion can't stand up to in-house testing.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 10/26/09 - 1:33pm.

Many emails have been sent to me about the lawsuit brought forward by ZL Technologies against Gar-ner. The San Jose-based ZL Technologies accuses Gar-ner of "defamation, trade libel, false advertising, unfair competition, and negligent interference with prospective economic advantage." (I won't use the company's full name in my blog anymore since the firm contacted me last summer.)

Why do I think Cisco a better choice over Blue Coat?

Could Cisco beat Blue Coat in a real world test?
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Thu, 10/22/09 - 2:12am.

Being asked why I would take Cisco over Blue Coat in a choice of vendors and products has led me to the following reasons. I would hope that the marketing teams of both companies who take so much time out of their days posting to other blogs would take the same amount of time to post to this blog. We invite them to reply to this blog and shine some light on their products. (Disclosure: Pluto Networks is a Cisco Reseller for VoIP, but not the WAAS)

Did Riverbed just put a big move on Cisco with release of 6.0?

Riverbed is the first do MAC
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 10/19/09 - 10:54am.

Today Riverbed tried to take a huge leap over Cisco, Blue Coat and Juniper by releasing RIOS 6.0. This biggest part of this announcement is the optimization for Mac clients. This will provide a new market for the company of which they have not had for the last six years. Later this week we are doing a question and answer session with Bob Gilbert of Riverbed on this new release and what it really means to the company and the competition. This will be published in a new blog by Friday. (Disclosure notice: Larry Chaffin is a Riverbed reseller.)

Tandberg Holders To Reject Cisco Bid Offer, someone said no to Cisco?

They say Tandberg would be better off not a Cisco company, like tell us something we dont know.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Thu, 10/15/09 - 6:24am.

While I was on a 5am Telepresence call with EMEA, this was sent to me buy someone on the call, they said I hope thats not a Tandberg Telepresence Unit you are using Larry, lol.

A group of 24% of the Tandberg shareholders say no to Cisco and that the company would be better off no a Cisco company. This comes from Swedish brokerage SEB Enskilda, which represents the 21 shareholders in the Norwegian company. So what does this say to Cisco? Have these shareholders seen what Cisco does with its acquisitions and don't want to see Tandberg go down the drain as another Cisco Company?

Could Vidyo trump LifeSize new desktop and Passport?

With computing power getting better evryday, Vidyo could be the play soon for all companies.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Thu, 10/08/09 - 8:06am.

Vidyo the up and comer in the Telepresence segment have come out with its own SMB version of their product. The new VidyoOne Package is aimed at small business so they can also have Personal Telepresence at the desktop. That's right I said the desktop since Vidyo does not need an appliance as it works as a software package on your computer so there is no need to carry an appliance around. A Vidyo Router in the data center is all you need.

A month has gone by and no apology from Gar-ner, arrogance is bliss.

Freedom of the press and free speech, they are on the hot seat with Gartner Inc.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 09/07/09 - 11:01am.

It has been a month since I posted the blog called "When censorship goes too far, we cannot say Gar-ner anymore". Since then I have received many email about Gar-ner and how really no one likes them for what they do. I am still waiting on a reply from Gar-ner about the email they sent to me, I have responded back to the email four times but never get a reply. I have sent an email to some C-Level Executives but it seems they never read the email.

Authors are now going to Guru to have content written

This is how so-called experts are built in this new media age
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Sat, 08/22/09 - 1:54pm.

I was sent this on Guru.com, seems like someone cannot do their own work and now is trying to get someone else to write it. Whatever happened to writing your own articles or books and taking pleasure in it? Now we have too many people doing this and taking credit as an expert in a book or web site. This just is not right. Next it will be certifications and people finding a way around it.

Makes you wonder if you can ever trust people or what they write now.

WI-FI Service on airlines does has a long way to go, could Chambers buy Airline WI-FI Company?

How long until Chambers says "Cisco needs to be in the Airline WI-FI business" and buys another company?
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Fri, 08/21/09 - 8:16am.

I was on a flight recently and that airline had in flight WI-FI, so while I was sitting in first class I decided to give it a try since I had lots of room to work. At first I was all happy of the idea, that I could get all of my news, email and do some searches while on a 6 hour flight. But then you figured out everyone else is doing the same thing.  The service got really slow, really fast to the point I was about to turn it off when I tried my vpn. My first trying did not work, but then I tried my backup vpn on a different port and it worked.
