WAN Optimization SCHWAN tization
The whole WAN Opt niche is such a crock! If people simply "MANAGED" their network there'd be no need for these expensive "designer" edge devices.
Think about it. You've got a business network, policies and well educated users. Everyone has a clear idea what the network is to be used for: Business tasks, communications and a modest amount of personal surfing....in that order. With a modestly priced Network Quality Assurance tool in-hand, every stakeholder could see how the resources were performing and what they contribute to the bottom line. That's an ROI. Throwing a box at the edge that shapes and throttles flow sounds sexy, but if the network is designed, provisioned and MANAGED WELL (people, process & technology), the need for more bandwidth, expensive gear and alarm response stuff will be absolutely minimal.
