Cisco equipment helps to balance WAN optimization with VoIP quality

WAN optimization is priority No. 1 at Nanometrics, maker of high-performance process control metrology systems used in semiconductor manufacturing, and it turned to its VoIP supplier Cisco to solve its network performance issues.

The problem was balancing WAN optimization with VoIP quality, particularly as Nanometrics was integrating with Accent Optical Technology, which it had acquired.

According to a story by Network World's Tim Greene:

Accent Optical was involved already in an extensive and cost-saving VoIP deployment; and Nanometrics, a maker of measuring tools for semiconductors, was testing WAN optimization gear to improve intercontinental WAN performance and save money as well. The two technologies weren’t playing well together, however, says Dave Kizer, director of IT for Nanometrics.

Kizer chose Cisco because of the integration between the Wide-Area Application Services (WAAS) modules and the router, When the router tags the VoIP traffic for priority, it can send the traffic on its way without it being queued up for the WAAS module, he says.
