Way back in 1997 I had HughesNet sattelite service and the biggest problem I found was one that wasn't really discussed in this story: Latency. Because of the enormous distance a packet has to travel you have to deal with latencies ranging from 200ms to 1.5s! This means that streaming and videoconferencing technologies probably won't work and VoIP is out of the question.
