Its unfortunate but you see this happen often. There are a few clowns that blow all the cash from a good and potentially profitable company. What’s more unfortunate is that these clowns have a very decent backing from the development community, as well as bank roll employees. Why invest in R&D when you can update your house, buy boats and fancy cars? Unfortunately, I would not blame demise on other more competitive Linux solutions, but your own lack of creativity and direction. Next time (if there is) perhaps you can learn from your shareholders.
